$42 Billion Stimulus Package is Passed by the Senate

The Labour Government won the approval of the Senate on Friday for its planned $42 billion Economic Stimulus Package.

After meeting with strong opposition, the Government was forced to amend its stimulus package in order to win the pivotal vote of Senator Nick Xenophon, who vetoed the bill on Thursday.

The initial package would have seen all working Australians earning up to $80,000 per annum, receive a cash handout of $950, and subsequent earners of up to $100,000 getting a smaller but still substantial piece of the pie. Thus making Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's proposal truly massive.

The amended stimulus package has cut the cash handout to low and middle income earners, as well as single income families, by $50. Thus allowing for a cash handout of up to $900.00.

Why not take advantage of our complimentary home loan health check?

Following the Reserve Banks recent decision to reduce the cash rate, many lenders are discounting interest rates and offering more attractive deals to remain competitive in the market. This is great news for you, as even a small rate cut can make a difference. There is no better time to review your current mortgage to ensure you are getting the best deal possible for your current circumstance.

30 per cent Deduction for Businesses

As an addition to the Government's Stimulus Package, it has also announced an additional tax deduction for businesses on depreciable asset acquisitions, subject to the following requirements.

Medicare Levy Surcharge Changes

A Bill to increase the Medicare levy surcharge thresholds was enacted. The new thresholds apply from 1 July 2008.

New Deeming Rates

From 17 November 2008, the social security income test deeming rates have been lowered to take account of decreased returns on financial investments.
Payments affected by the decrease to the deeming rates include: age pension; disability support pension; carer payment; parenting payment; and Newstart allowances.

Health Cover Penalties

Clients should consider the potential loading for private hospital policy under the Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) prior to terminating a policy. Broadly, the LHC provisions penalise individuals who take out private hospital cover later in their life The LHC loading will only be removed after an individual has held an appropriate private hospital cover for a continuous period of 10 years.

Deductibility of Legal Expenses

In a majority decision, the High Court has found that the deductibility of an expense did not require a direct connection with the income producing activity. Rather, the connection could be direct or indirect, provided the connection was not too remote.
